Salvia africana lutea 1ltr

€10.00

In the wild in South Africa, this Salvia forms a hefty shrub up to 2m. Round here I suspect it will be substantially shorter. I love plants with brown flowers (you may have noticed) and this is one of the best! I also like things that grow gnarly looking and this guy does that too. Extremely drought tolerant, the branched plant will eventually turn woody, leaves are thick, stiff and silver grey and the quite large and squat salvia flowers are bourn in late summer/early autumn in shades of coppery burned orange, brown and with green buds. Highly aromatic, but on the acquired side of pleasant. Grow as part of summer pot displays, raised borders or dry beds with sub-shrubs and succulents where it will act as a proper talking point!

Grow in very well drained/open soils, prefers full sun, it is hardy once established apparently, but I suspect the wet of Irish winters will kill it if left outside, so I bring mine into cold greenhouse and keep on dry side for winter months, plunge out how you want again once temperatures rise.

Leaves of this are harvested in South Africa to use in cooking and for teas.
