Why So Much?

Pricing of plants and your own time as a freelance worker is difficult, particularly to someone who has chronic imposter syndrome and has a tendency to give things away rather than sell them. I constantly have to remind myself of the value of things and myself and these are the guidelines I use.

PLANTS:

  • Ease of propagation

  • Time taken to get to saleable size

  • Rarity

  • Size

  • Type; biennial/perennial/tree/shrub/bulb etc

  • Ease of maintenance

  • Costs; compost/pots/feed/price of seed etc/website/postage/packing/office supplies

  • Average market cost

All of the above will have a bearing on my pricing. I don’t bother pricing for time, or I’d always be at a loss.

When it comes to my own pricing for the advisory service, I REALLY struggle with valuing my own abilities so I use this.

  • What the average “market” rate is for similar role

  • My TENS OF THOUSANDS of hours of learning/experience/hands on work/training

  • Allowing for the fact most jobs are going to be a minimum of half a day’s work getting to/from

  • Hours spent preparing documents

  • Expenses; Petrol/wear and tear on vehicle/electricity/broadband/usb stick/website
